Sunderland’s search for a striker looks to have taken another twist with deals for Sheffield Wednesday duo Jordan Rhodes and Atdhe Nuhiu looking unlikely.

However, the club are still expected to bring in a number nine and could sign a Premier League forward on loan according to journalist Alan Nixon who works for The Sun.

He has regularly updated fans on Sunderland’s business this month and revealed that a deal for Nuhiu was going cold, whilst also adding that Rhodes was proving too expensive for the Black Cats.

Even though that was bad news for supporters, the prospect of a Premier League striker on loan could soften the blow.

Having sold James Vaughan to Wigan and with Bournemouth recalling top scorer Lewis Grabban, Coleman has been desperate to bring in attacking reinforcements.

The former Wales boss is expected to use Kazenga LuaLua in an advanced role but it leaves teenagers Joshua Maja and Joel Asoro as the only natural strikers at the club.

Sunderland lost 3-1 to relegation rivals Birmingham City last night which leaves the Wearside club 23rd in the Championship.

The Verdict

The next few hours are crucial to Sunderland, they simply have to bring in players, including at least one striker, if they are to have any chance of survival.

The news from Alan Nixon is mixed as the Owls pair would’ve done a very good job for this struggling side but clearly it’s not going to happen.

Therefore, fans will be hoping the mystery Premier League forward is ready to sign.
