According to reliable journalist, Alan Nixon, Sunderland are set to take a “massive stride” in their quest to sign Everton’s Aiden McGeady.

McGeady looks set to leave Goodison Park this summer, and had been heavily linked with a move to Preston North End, where he spent time on-loan last season.

However, Sunderland have since appointed Preston’s manager, Simon Grayson, as their new boss, which has led to the Stadium of Light outfit entering the race to sign McGeady.

Grayson appears keen to link back up with the Irish international, who excelled at Deepdale under the 47-year old last season, helping Preston to finish in the top-half of the Sky Bet Championship table.

The 31-year old scored eight goals in 34 Championship appearances for Preston, also adding nine assists to his tally for the 2016/17 season.

Preston remain interested in taking McGeady back to Deepdale, but face competition from some of the Championship’s big hitters - including Sunderland.

Sunderland’s North-East rivals, Middlesbrough, who like their neighbours are preparing for a return to the Championship, are also reportedly interested in signing the forward this summer.

According to some reports, Boro are leading the race to sign McGeady, but more recent developments suggest Sunderland will take the advantage in the coming week.
