Yorkshire Evening Post football writer Phil Hay has confirmed on Twitter that as far as he is aware, a deal to bring Carpi striker Jerry Mbakogu to Elland Road is 'still there to be done'.

Hay, a respected authority on Leeds United, claims that the last time he asked the deal was still on the back burner. It was initially set up in January according to the journalist and could well come to fruition this summer.

In 2014/15 Mbakogu scored 15 goals to help Carpi gain promotion to Serie A , although they came down after just one season. Now, history is repeating itself as he looks to once again fire them to the top flight.

Mbakogu has scored eight goals in 23 games in all competitions for Carpi in Serie B this season. They're in the hunt for a play offs place, which could be a factor in any potential deal.

It wouldn't be the first time Leeds have dipped into the Italian second-tier for a player, Caleb Ekuban arrived in the summer from Chievo Verona but has found chances hard to come by, but he recently claimed he was growing in confidence.

The Verdict

I'm not sure this will be popular with the Leeds faithful, they've just about had their fill of ineffective strikers from foreign shores.

Lasogga and Ekuban have both flopped at Elland Road and there's no indication Mbakogu wouldn't be exactly the same.

For what it is worth, he does look to have more about him than Ekuban and is perhaps a more rounded striker, but I'm sure that won't appease the Leeds fans one bit.
