Mallik Wilks has returned to Leeds United early from his loan spell with Grimsby Town, after the forward suffered a hamstring injury.

The Yorkshire Evening Post’s Phil Hay has moved to Twitter to confirm Wilks’ return to Elland Road, after the youngster pulled his hamstring whilst out on-loan in Sky Bet League Two.

Wilks has spent time away from Elland Road at two separate clubs so far this season, featuring for Accrington Stanley, who he scored five goals for, and then Grimsby.

After a January move to Grimsby, Wilks struggled to make the same impact Blundell Park, featuring on just four occasions and failing to score a goal for the struggling League Two side.

Following a hamstring injury, Wilks has returned to Leeds and will continue his rehab at Thorp Arch.

The Whites moved to extend Wilks’ deal at Elland Road prior to his loan move to Accrington, with the 19-year-old contracted to Leeds for another 12 months, until the end of the 2018/19 campaign.

The Verdict

This is hugely disappointing news for Leeds, but more so Wilks, who will have been hoping to impress his parent-club at Grimsby.

Although Leeds were keen to sign Wilks onto longer terms in the summer, they haven’t seen enough of him at senior level to judge if he is ready for first-team football.

Wilks’ hamstring injury is likely to deny him that opportunity to impress, meaning this update is a huge blow for both the player and club ahead of the run-in.
