Alan Nixon has revealed that Championship clubs want the coming transfer window to stay open for an extended period of time, following the temporary postponement of the Football League.

This weekend was supposed to mark the final one of the Championship season. Promotion parties were planned, whilst some would've been preparing for the worst. But instead we go another week without football.

Plans for finishing the current season are only a couple of steps further ahead than when the football was initially postponed. Doubts remain over whether the Championship season will finish, whilst it looks likely that League One and Two will be voided altogether.

Finishing the season is only half the battle though - how and when we start the next is arguably of bigger concern. Preparations for that too are falling behind, but Nixon provided unknowing fans with an update on his Twitter earlier today:

He alleges that Championship clubs want the following transfer window to be extended as far as February. The summer window was originally scheduled to open on June 10th for this season, lasting 12 weeks.

That would give teams in the UK and much of Europe 12 weeks to regain fitness, finish this current season, have a pre-season, and do all their summer business before starting over again.

The verdict

It seems like a given that the dates of the next transfer window will be amended. There's no other way around it than to do so, but how long to extend it by is the real question - too long and it could become farcical, not long enough and it could leave many in even more turmoil.
