Sheffield Wednesday have reached desperation mode in their attempts to stay in the Championship for another season with just two games remaining.
The Owls remain four points behind Derby County following both outfits losing on Saturday afternoon to Middlesbrough and Birmingham City respectively, and it’ll now take a mammoth effort for Wednesday to stay up.
Wednesday may even know their fate following their early kick off this weekend against Nottingham Forest – a loss would consign them to League One next season.
Things haven’t been easy with manager Darren Moore contracting COVID and then developing a bout of pneumonia, and despite best efforts to fight for Moore at the Riverside a few days ago it wasn’t enough to prevent a defeat to Neil Warnock’s side.

Until the moment it’s mathematically impossible to stay up though, the Owls players will keep on battling and Josh Windass, who has scored nine Championship goals for the club this season, has issued a rallying cry on behalf of the squad to Instagram.

Wednesday fans probably just want their players to focus on their efforts on the pitch rather than on social media, and it’s not too late to climb out of the relegation zone.
They probably do need two wins out of two though to stay up – a draw would be enough in the interim to cut the gap to Derby to three points but with the Rams playing later in the day against a Swansea side which is expected to be much-changed ahead of their play-off campaign.
Nothing less than a win in that case will be accepted by Wednesday fans as the season reaches its climax – squeaky bum time is officially here.
