Josh Windass has admitted that he believes that Sheffield Wednesday have managed to secure the services of some good players this summer.

The Owls have decided to make some significant alterations to their squad ahead of the 2022/23 campaign as they aim to reach new heights in League One later this year.

As well as waving goodbye to the likes of Saido Berahino, Massimo Luongo, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Sam Hutchinson, Wednesday have signed seven players in the current transfer window.

Reece James has joined the Owls on loan from Blackpool whilst David Stockdale, Ben Heneghan, Michael Ihiekwe, Michael Smith, Will Vaulks and Akin Famewo have all sealed permanent moves to Hillsborough.

Having suffered defeat at the hands of Sunderland in the play-offs last season, Wednesday will be determined to launch a push for a top-two finish in the coming months.

The Owls will begin their quest for success when they face Portsmouth in League One on July 30th.

Ahead of this upcoming clash, Windass has insisted that the club should be looking to win the third-tier title in 2023 after signing some good players.

Speaking to the club's official website (as cited by Yorkshire Live), Windass said: "We had a good squad last season.

"We've signed good players this year so hopefully we can go one better than last season and get promotion which we all want.

"If Sheffield Wednesday are not aiming to win League One then there's something wrong.

"We've got the players to do it and the management staff so hopefully it's a good one."

The Verdict

It is hardly a surprise that Windass thinks that the club have made a strong start to their transfer business as they have managed to sign some individuals who impressed at this level last season.

Ihiekwe and Heneghan both demonstrated that they are capable of competing in the third-tier during the previous campaign as they averaged WhoScored match ratings of 7.22 and 6.93 at this level for Rotherham United and AFC Wimbledon.

Smith meanwhile helped the Millers secure promotion to the Championship by scoring 18 goals for the club.

Providing that Windass, who managed to provide six direct goal contributions in 11 league appearances last season, is able to maintain his fitness in the coming months, he could help the Owls make a positive start to the new term.
