Josh Tymon outlines his plan for Stoke City future

Published

Stoke City defender Josh Tymon has suggested that he wants to remain with the Potters beyond the end of his current deal and earn a new contract with his performances.

Tymon has managed to establish himself as a crucial part of Michael O’Neill’s side this season, managing to be an ever-present for the Potters in the Championship in their opening 16 matches.

During those appearances, Tymon has managed to fire home one goal and one assist. He has also been averaging 0.8 successful dribbles, 1.4 key passes and winning an average of 3.3 duels per game.

The 22-year-old’s current deal with Stoke is set to expire at the end of the campaign. It had been looking like he could leave the Potters after he had been sent out on two loan spells in the last few years and was struggling to make it into the side, but his form this season could change that.

How many games did Ryan Shawcross play for the club?

Speaking to Duck Magazine, via the Stoke Sentinel, Tymon suggested that he is aiming to earn a new contract with the Potters by maintaining his performance levels from the start of the campaign.

He said: “(My hopes for the future are to) just to play as many games as possible. That’s what any player would say.

“Of course, I want success for the club and you Stoke fans – that would be amazing – but personally, I’ve been given an opportunity and it’s up to me to take it with both hands.

“I feel like I’ve been playing well, and so need to keep that up. We have a strong squad now, and if my standards drop, I’ll lose my spot in the team.

“I take nothing for granted. My contract ends soon and I want to make sure my performances are strong enough to stay in the team and also be offered a new deal. I’ve got lots of years ahead of me, hopefully lots of great ones with Stoke.”

The verdict

Tymon has to be a player that Stoke feel is worth a new contract if he continues to be as an important part of the side as he has been so far this season. The defender deserves a lot of credit for the way he has improved his game and O’Neill has managed to get the best out of him by handing him consistent game time.

There will now be other sides that are taking a look at a player with Tymon’s potential considering his contract situation, so Stoke need to act on the defender’s desire to remain with them quickly and ensure that they do not allow him to leave the club on a free transfer.

The fact that Tymon wants his long-term future to be with the Potters shows that the club are moving in the right direction and that is something that O’Neill will be pleased to hear from one of his mainstays in the side.

Agreeing a new deal with Tymon should not be too difficult for Stoke considering that he seems to want to stay with the Potters. It seems like a no-brainer for them at this stage.
