Bristol City midfielder Josh Brownhill has sent a message to Robins striker Matty Taylor after his midweek showing against Manchester City.

Taylor came up against Premier League champions Manchester City in the Carabao Cup for his temporary side Oxford United and, although the League One outfit went on to lose 3-1, it was a performance from Taylor which drew many plaudits.

QUIZ: Bristol City through the decade: How much can you remember about Bristol City’s 16/17 season?

Watching from home, Brownhill shared his thoughts on his Instagram story, writing: "My favourite player!" Alongside a video of Taylor equalising at the start of the second half.

The 29-year-old was sent to the Kassam on a season-long loan back in the summer after becoming surpluss to requirements to Lee Johnson, and has been enjoying life under Karl Robinson's stewardship.

Last night's strike was his ninth in 17 appearances in all competitions, providing an extra two assists in that time as well as Oxford chase promotion.

Bristol City are involved in a promotion chase of their own, but after two defeats on the bounce at Ashton Gate have slipped out of the play-off places.

This weekend sees them travel to Hillsborough for what is sure to be another tough challenge against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday lunchtime.

The verdict

You can't help but wonder whether Johnson is slightly regretting letting Taylor leave on loan in the summer.

Is he good enough to lead a promotion charge? No. But is he a better back-up option to Weimann and Diedhiou than Rodri and Semenyo? Almost definitely.

Afobe's injury will have been dificult to predict in fairness and Taylor himself will have wanted first-team football. But it is something that Johnson may well be considering.
