Barnsley midfielder, Josh Benson, has opened up on Michael Duff’s decision to play him at wing-back recently for the Tykes.

Having gone without a start for Barnsley since their win over Forest Green Rovers at the end of October, Benson found his way into the starting 11 during the club’s 3-0 win over Crewe Alexandra in the second round of the FA Cup over the weekend. He did so as a wing-back, a position he hadn’t previously played in his senior career.

Benson was stellar in his performance in the stead of Jordan Williams, playing the entire 90 minutes for the first time in over a month and scoring from the penalty spot in the 57th minute to send his side into the third round of the FA Cup.

The goal was the fifth of the 2022-23 season for Benson and his first since September 24 during Barnsley’s 3-1 win at home over Charlton in League One.

After the match, Benson reflected on his move to wing-back with the Yorkshire Post: "I enjoyed it. I have played there (right wing-back) a few times with the youth team. I have not played there for a few years, but Tom Edwards was good behind me with his communication. I felt quite comfortable there.”

The Verdict

Since signing with Barnsley from Burnley in July 2021, Benson has largely featured in central or defensive midfield roles for the Tykes. If he can continue to show that he has the ability to thrive at the right wing-back role, he could see his time on the pitch increase in 2023.

Positional versatility, along with the ability to take spot kicks for the Reds should present manager Michael Duff with options for his club as they enter the new year. Currently occupying the 6th position in League One, Barnsley will need the flexibility that Benson gives them.
