Jose Gomes has stated that Reading must take inspiration from past teams and keep doing what they're doing.

The Royals have started the season slowly, but have still picked up some eye-catching results in the first seven fixtures of the season.

Gomes' side beat Cardiff 3-0, whilst picking up a valuable point in an impressive display at Slaven Bilic's unbeaten West Brom side.

More recently though, the Royals have suffered defeats to Charlton and Middlesbrough that has left Gomes looking to past seasons for positivity.

Speaking to Reading Chronicle, Gomes said: "If you have a look at the Championship table last season, Aston Villa were 12th after seven matches.

"Norwich were 16th with eight points and 12 goals conceded. It is the Championship and we need to be patient and we need to trust in the process, the way that we are working and trust our players.

"I just want to reinforce the idea that the Championship is a very long competition and we want to get the points as soon as possible but a lot of things happen.

"If we feel we aren't working well or creating chances to win games, then OK but the players are fantastic and they have fantastic relationships and they are very good people."

The Verdict

Reading have had an interesting start to the season, they seem to create a lot of chances but aren't able to convert despite spending big on two strikers in the summer.

It's only a matter of time before it clicks for Gomes and his side, and I think he's right to look back on past campaigns and suggest that it takes time to gel.

It is a very long competition and we all know a good run can propel you in the top-half and then anything can happen from there. The team looks good on paper, but now they must turn their performances into results.
