Reading boss Jose Gomes has insisted he is not concerned about his position at the club despite their miserable 4-1 defeat at home to Fulham on Tuesday night.

The Royals found themselves 3-0 down and reduced to ten men after 30 minutes following Tom Cairney's opener, Aleksandar Mitrovic's brace and John Swift's dismissal for a second bookable offence.

Cairney then added a fourth for the visitors following the interval to make it 4-0 before Yakou Meite pulled one back for the Royals late on, but the goal came much too late to help mount any form of comeback.

The defeat means Reading are now sitting one place above the Championship relegation zone having lost four of their last five league matches with this run adding increased pressure on Gomes' job.

The Madejski Stadium outfit bolstered their squad over the summer with the recruitment of ten new signings, and Reading's owners would have been undoubtedly been expecting much better results in the early stages of the new campaign.

However, Gomes has now claimed he does not have any concerns about losing his job as he is confident his Reading players will produce the required response to improve their league form.

"I'm not concerned about my position. I really believe in the way I work and believe in the honest way I pass my message onto the players," he told Berkshire Live.

"The togetherness we have at this club is really amazing - I'm concerned about the points we didn't get and I am completely sure the players will give the proper answer to get the points we need."

Gomes has been at the managerial helm since December 2018 when he replaced Paul Clement as the club's manager, and the Portuguese inspired his side to Championship survival in the second half of the campaign.

The Verdict

There was plenty of hope surrounding Reading following their impressive end to the transfer window which saw them sign the likes of George Puscas and Rafael Cabral, but this has certainly not been translated in results so far this term.

Gomes should be given time by Reading to turn things around given his fine work at the club last season, but he will surely start fearing for his future at the club if their current plight continues.

Fulham are of course a top side and should be competing at the top of the table by the end of the campaign, but some of Reading's recent results have seen them lose to sides such as Blackburn and Middlesbrough. These are the results that should be the most concerning.

The Royals have one more chance to end their winless run when they travel to Bristol City on Saturday, but another poor result could lead to the pressure seriously mounting on Gomes.
