Finishing 15th, 16 points off the relegation zone and 18 off the play-offs is the definitive definition of mid-table mediocrity.

With that season ending position, one would assume adding to a squad to improve would be the first thing that comes to mind to be better the following season.

For Sheffield Wednesday boss Jos Luhukay, that isn't the case.

After a 1-0 pre-season win over Lincoln, the Owls boss said he was happy with his squad. Wednesday fans probably aren’t.

Two years ago Sheffield Wednesday were in the Championship play-off final. One game away from the Premier League.

Now, you can put that down to the league becoming more competitive and a harder competition to compete in. Or you can look at the lack of freshening up and the lack of improvement within the squad.

Admittedly there has been a managerial change but that should not be the cause of a lacklustre statement as the squad being fine. It obviously isn’t.

Wednesday can’t look to compete if they aren’t going to improve their side.

Jordan Rhodes has since departed on loan to Norwich with no replacement planned from what can be seen.

The manager might say he is happy with his squad after a 1-0 win against Lincoln in a friendly but will be happy if that get thumped three times in a row after the transfer window closes? That is highly doubtful.

Even if you know you are not going to compete, adding players livens up the doldrums that is the pre-season.

Now the World Cup has finished, the transfer window’s pace will hopefully quicken.

And for Sheffield Wednesday’s sake, it better.
