Sheffield Wednesday suffered a third consecutive Championship defeat on Saturday as they were hammered 4-0 by Bristol City.

The game was effectively over at half-time with the Robins 3-0 up following an embarrassing display from the Yorkshire side.

As you would expect, there were very few positives for manager Jos Luhukay to take from the day, although one was the return of Tom Lees – who is expected to start against Ipswich tomorrow.

The former Leeds defender hadn’t played since November but came on for the second half at Ashton Gate after Daniel Pudil suffered an injury.

And, Luhukay was quoted by the Sheffield Star saying that getting the commanding defender back on the pitch was a boost whilst also saying he is ready to play against Mick McCarthy’s side.

I think for Tom it is very important he had a new feeling that he is back and I think he can give the team also his qualities. Maybe that is the positive we have.”

Tom has worked hard in the last weeks and months. Before he came back, he trained a lot and played twice with the under-23s. This is the next step. He is ready to start.”

The Verdict

The first half performance at Bristol City proved just how much Wednesday have missed Lees, so having him back is a major positive.

Obviously, given the lengthy lay-off he had, he will need to be managed carefully but Luhukay clearly needs him out on the pitch.

Relegation, whilst unlikely, is a possibility so the boss will need to get his best players out on the pitch as soon as possible and that includes Lees.
