Sheffield Wednesday boss Jos Luhukay wouldn't criticise Tom Lees despite his individual mistakes in the 2-1 defeat at home to Middlesbrough last night.

The usually reliable skipper was beaten far too easily as Mo Besic opened the scoring, before an awful pass put the Bosnian through on goal, who then squared for Britt Assombalonga to tap home for what turned out to be the winner.

However, the Owls manager told the Sheffield Star that the centre-back needs support at this time and admitted the player was extremely low in the dressing room afterwards.

"Tom was very, very disappointed after the game but he is our captain. He is a fantastic character and a good defender."

"Sometimes these things happen. We must look forward. It is important that we help give support to the the players who made the mistakes and hopefully it won't happen again."

It had been a fairly even contest until the two goals that came within six minutes of each other and despite a late Adam Reach strike, Wednesday couldn't force an equaliser.

The result means Luhukay's men are sure to drop out the top six later this afternoon after the rest of the division have played.

The Verdict

This is good management from Luhukay as there is nothing to be gained from criticising his player in public.

Lees won't need telling that he messed up and with such a senior, experienced figure, you just have to trust that he will bounce back.

However, his performance will have worried Luhukay, who may consider benching Lees for the midweek game against QPR.
