The injury crisis at Sheffield Wednesday has been well-documented this season, with the absence of a magnitude of the Owls’ top stars playing a significant role in their failure to secure a third consecutive play-off appearance.

A top six finish is out of the question, and relegation appears unlikely, but manager Jos Luhukay will hope to have as many of his crocked men back within the next few months as he attempts to evaluate who has a future at the club beyond the end of the season.

The Owls face a massive task this weekend, with in-form Premier League side Swansea City visiting Hillsborough in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

The Swans are headed by former Wednesday boss, Carlos Carvalhal, who has guided the Welsh side out of the bottom three following his appointment in December.

Luhukay is set to be without influential midfielder Barry Bannan for the tie, but provided Sheffield Star journalist Dom Howson with a positive update on the Scottish international, claiming that he is likely to be available for selection within the next two weeks.

The Verdict

Bannan has been a huge loss in the middle of the park, with the creative midfielder one of the most consistent performers at Hillsborough in recent times.

Set to be back within the next couple of weeks, his return to action is likely to coincide with an upturn in results, and the player’s influence on the squad cannot be understated.

A fan favourite, Bannan cannot return soon enough for beleaguered Owls fans.
