Sheffield Wednesday manager Jos Luhukay has hit back at critics of his squad rotation insisting he does so to avoid more injury problems.

The Dutchman had been tinkering with his squad in the build-up to Saturday's clash with Rotherham, but says he has been taking the advice of the club's medical staff.

"If I had not listened to my staff or sports science team in the last weeks and months, I'm 100 per cent sure that we would have five to 10 injured players," Luhukay told the Sheffield Star.

"I take my staff's advice and protect players.

"When I let them play, maybe they are out for six to eight weeks or longer away from the team."

Wednesday dropped to 17th in the Championship table thanks to a disappointing 2-2 draw to fellow strugglers Rotherham United at Hillsborough.

Lucas Joao scored twice but it was not enough to earn Luhukay just his second win in eight games, leaving the club just six points above the relegation spots.

This Saturday sees the Owls travel to Swansea City where they will undoubtedly be desperate to get back to winning ways and begin their march back up the Championship.

The Verdict

This is the reason I believe Luhukay has been getting slightly harsh treatment from the fans.

Considering he has had to juggle a ludicrous injury crisis and players made of uncooked spaghetti, as well as a transfer embargo, the job he is doing looks far more adequate.

But this is football. It is an incredibly brutal world and Luhukay will need to turn things around and quickly to ease the pressure on himself and his team.
