New Sheffield Wednesday manager Jos Luhukay faces a huge task for his first game in charge as the Owls make the short trip to Bramall Lane on Friday night.

The Dutch manager will sample the ferocious Steel City derby as he begins his Wednesday career and could become an instant hero with the fans if they leave with three points.

However, the former Gladbach manager was quick to insist that the focus on Friday night should not be about him when speaking to the Sheffield Star.

I do not want to be the hero, only someone who does a very good job. I will be very happy for the team if we win on Friday but it is not about me. The players will give the performance and the fans are happy. That is what I like.”

Luhukay has experienced several hostile derby games in Germany over the years and admits he is looking forward to the fixture.

Derbies are special games. They are everywhere, in every country. Emotion, atmosphere, passion. They are the things you feel and I hope the players have the motivation to play good football.”

The Verdict

Even though he was something of a shock appointment, Owls fans must be quietly pleased with how Luhukay has come across since he got the job.

Once again, he delivers a strong message here and clearly is looking forward to the derby game whilst also keeping the focus on the team.

Although, it’s ultimately going to come down to how Wednesday play at Bramall Lane but it gives the new boss a chance to become a fans favourite immediately.
