Sheffield Wednesday have had to contend with an awful injury crisis that has robbed them off almost all their best players at one point or another this season.

The Owls are currently without the likes of Fernando Forestieri, Tom Lees, Kieran Lee and Barry Bannan who would make a big difference to Jos Luhukay’s side.

Another man who has been a big miss is Sam Hutchinson, but the former Chelsea midfielder is stepping up his return from injury.

The 28-year old has had well documented injury issues over the years and they have plagued him once again this season. Hutchinson has made just six Championship appearances in this campaign with the last of those coming on December 30.

However, Luhukay told Sheffield Star journalist Dom Howson that the influential midfielder is expected to start training with the group again on Wednesday.

Obviously, the Owls won’t rush their key man back during what is a demanding schedule at the minute but Hutchinson may have one eye on the FA Cup replay against Swansea in eight days’ time as a chance to get some minutes on the pitch.

The Verdict

It has been an extremely tough season for Sam Hutchinson who will be desperate to get back out playing.

There’s no doubt the Owls have suffered without the combative midfielder who brings a lot to the Wednesday team with his strong, determined style.

Although, given how long he has been out it’s important to manage him carefully as the last thing the player or club need is another setback, so supporters may have to be patient as Hutchinson works his way back.
