Sheffield Wednesday head coach Jos Luhukay has given high praise to youngsters Fraser Preston and Matt Penney ahead of the Owls clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers tomorrow night.

According to a tweet from Sheffield Wednesday, the club announced that 19-year-old Preston would be available for tomorrow’s second round Carabao Cup fixture at Hillsborough.

The tweet stated: “JL: Fraser Preston will be available for us against for tomorrow. We trust our young players and they are taking their chances”.

This was followed by a tweet stating: "JL: Also with Matt Penney, he has taken his opportunity with both hands and been fantastic in the left back position, we are very happy with him and his progression."

The Dutch manager has guided the Owls to two victories and one draw from their opening five league fixtures, with Wednesday currently sat 14th in the league table.

Penney, who has made just three appearances for Sheffield Wednesday, has found himself in the starting line-up in recent weeks following an injury to veteran defender Daniel Pudil.

The 20-year-old left back, along with Preston, have impressed thoroughly this season, and will be hoping they can help the Owls improve on last season’s 15th place finish.

The Verdict

Both Matt Penney and Fraser Preston would not have been expecting to play such a big role in the first team this season.

But, following injuries and faith from the manager, both youngsters have taken their opportunity well and look to have impressed Jos Luhukay.

Sheffield Wednesday have had a torrid summer with the transfer embargo, with many expecting them to go overboard with signings now it has been lifted. But, it seems the Owls manager has faith in the youth of the squad.
