Jordan Rhodes has claimed that the team let down Danny Schofield after Huddersfield Town’s defeat to Preston North End.

The Terriers fell to a 4-1 loss to Preston in the opening round of the League Cup midweek.

Rhodes’ 67th minute strike pulled a goal back, but the damage was already done at that stage, with the team already 4-0.

It has been a disappointing start to the campaign for the club, with Huddersfield bottom of the Championship table having tasted defeat in both of their opening games against Burnley and Birmingham City.

The veteran striker believes that the team must improve, with “hard work and togetherness” cited as what will be needed to get through this tough period.

“It’s important that we don’t do that collectively within the team, we stay together and continue what was so good last year and what we had within those four walls in that changing room was a real team, togetherness, and a good spirit,” said Rhodes, via The Yorkshire Post.

“It’s important that we keep that together and we don’t let that break us, because having that together this season will win more games that we lose.

“[The performance was] Completely not good enough.

“That’s from all us lads – we’ve really let the manager down, the staff down, and the fans here tonight who have paid their hard earned money.

“We’ve really not been good enough, and that’s for the first half an hour in three games now, we’ve given ourselves an absolute mountain to climb.

“It’s just not good enough for a Huddersfield Town team.

“From a fans point of view, you must be incredibly frustrated, and angry, and quite rightly so.

“But we’ve got to believe that we can get out of this situation.”

It was a disruptive summer at the John Smith Stadium with the shock departure of Carlos Corberan causing the abrupt appointment of Schofield as manager.

The loss of Lewis O’Brien and Harry Toffolo also came as big blows to the side that reached the play-off final last season.

Up next for Huddersfield will be the visit of Stoke City on August 13 as the team seeks its first victory of the new campaign.

The Verdict

The two league defeats were disappointing but understandable given the circumstances going into the season.

But the humiliating scoreline against Preston will feel like a real rock bottom already.

The team must now have an immediate reaction against the Potters to avoid this becoming a real backslide.

Having a leader with the experience of Rhodes could be crucial in the team arresting this slump over the next few weeks.
