Sheffield Wednesday defender Joost van Aken has vowed to improve his form, following an indifferent start to life in South Yorkshire.

The 23-year-old Dutchman has varied between solid defensive displays and costly errors, with his inconsistency costing him a place in the Wednesday side on multiple occasions this season.

The defender made the switch to Hillsborough from Eredivisie side Heerenveen in the summer, and has made ten appearances in the league so far.

Making the step-up from the Dutch top-flight to the English game has proven difficult for the youngster, who has promised that he will come good in time.

“It is not nice when you are not playing,” he told The Sheffield Star.

“I know I have to improve a few things so I’m working hard in training.

“I tried to work hard in training, stay fit, and improve my abilities.”

The Verdict

The Dutch defender has shown signs of brilliance during his time at Hillsborough, and I strongly believe that he will become one of the best centre-halves in the division in coming years.

A commanding presence with excellent positioning, van Aken was always going to suffer dodgy patches of form having just moved to the league, so the fact that he has indeed displayed several excellent displays is promising.

Still learning the language and the game in this country which is similar but faster than the Dutch league, van Aken has adapted brilliantly to his new surroundings, and fans should be happy with what they have seen from the player so far.
