Charlton Athletic midfielder Jonny Williams has admitted that he has been delighted with the way that the club have kicked-off their return to the second-tier.

The Addicks are currently second in the Championship having secured victories over Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City and will be looking to maintain their 100 per cent winning record when they face Barnsley on Saturday.

With only Manchester City and Liverpool averaging more points in English football than Charlton in 2019 (via London News Online), Lee Bowyer's side will be extremely confident in their ability to overcome the challenge that the Tykes will pose.

Having provided two assists for Charlton this season after signing a new deal this summer (via BBC Sport), Williams is expected to be involved at Oakwell after missing the club's defeat to Forest Green Rovers in the Carabao Cup.

Speaking to London News Online about the Addicks' barnstorming start to the year, the midfield said: “It has been really enjoyable, it’s definitely the most enjoyable start I’ve had in my career.

“I’ve always wanted to be in a team and doing a pre-season where I will be at that team. I’d never had that in my career.

“I’d always been with Palace at the start but not quite in the squad and then loaned out after the season started.

"It hasn’t always felt like I’m part of it.

“Luckily I went away for pre-season with Charlton and I only missed a few days.

"Now we have got two wins out of two after facing two very good teams. It’s amazing really, we keep riding the wave from last year."

Williams began the previous campaign without a club after leaving Sunderland yet was given the chance to prove himself earlier this year by Bowyer who initially brought him to The Valley on a short-term deal.

Having forced his way into Charlton's starting eleven, the 25-year-old featured on 18 occasions as he helped his side achieve promotion to the Championship via the play-offs.

The Verdict

When you consider just how big of an impact Williams has had for the Addicks since joining the club, it would not be at all surprising if he ends up inspiring them to a successful season in the second-tier.

However, although the midfielder has managed to avoid injury during his time at Charlton, it may be a wise decision for Bowyer to put a limit on his involvement as doing so could allow the former Crystal Palace man to maintain his fitness levels.

With the Addicks experiencing a superb start to the 2019/2020 campaign, it would be naive to completely rule out the club being able to achieve back-to-back promotions and thus end their hiatus from the Premier League.
