Charlton Athletic midfielder Jonny Williams has lauded team-mate Conor Gallagher for the impact that he has been able to make for Lee Bowyer's side so far this season.

Since joining the Addicks on loan from Chelsea earlier this month, the midfielder has scored three goals in four appearances with his latest strike coming in the club's 1-0 victory over Brentford last weekend.

Still only 19-years-old, Gallagher could be about to embark on a breakthrough campaign which in turn may allow Charlton to achieve success in the Championship.

Currently being utilised by Bowyer as an attacking midfielder, the loanee is also capable of playing in a more defensive role and thus offers the Addicks a great deal of versatility.

Speaking to London News Online about Gallagher, Williams said: "There's a reason why he's at Chelsea and why he's a Chelsea player.

"You've seen what Mason Mount did in the Championship last year, and if he carries on like that I don't see why he won't get a chance.

"He's still so young, he's been unbelievable.

"What surprised me most is his will to win, and desire to get better and prove what a player he is.

"He puts in an absolute shift.

"Sometimes you don't know what you're going to get from loan players, especially from top clubs.

"But he's been a pleasure, he's clever, picks up great positions.

"He's proved what a player he is and what a signing he's been"

Williams, who signed a new deal with Charlton earlier this summer (via BBC Sport), has already demonstrated a superb working relationship with Gallagher as it was his pass that set-up the Chelsea loanee last Saturday.

The Addicks will be looking to maintain their unbeaten start in the Championship when they travel to Madejski Stadium this weekend to face Reading.

The Verdict

By making the decision to bring Gallagher to The Valley, Bowyer has seemingly secured one of the coups of the summer as the midfielder has torn the second-tier to shreds in his first few games at this level.

Despite having only youth football for Chelsea up until this season, Gallagher already looks right at home in the Championship.

If he can maintain his consistency over the coming months, there is no reason why the Addicks cannot launch a sustained bid for promotion as they unquestionably have the firepower to compete with the very best in this particular division.
