Luton Town manager Graeme Jones has hailed the performance of Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu during his side's 2-1 win over Charlton Athletic in the Championship on Tuesday night.

Visiting Charlton took the lead after seven minutes through Jonathan Leko before Ruddock fired home the equaliser, driving into the box and finishing low past Dillon Phillips.

Izzy Brown scored his first goal for the club just before the hour mark, ending a run of five-straight losses for Luton.

Speaking about Ruddock to Dunstable Today, Jones said:

“He was like a Premier League striker, left foot finish, wrong foot and I thought Pelly was our man of the match without singling anybody out.

“I thought he was absolutely outstanding, but I thought he was on Saturday too (against Leeds)."

Luton lost 2-1 to Leeds at the weekend but came to close to taking what would've been an impressive point, after an own-goal from Hatters defender Matthew Pearson gave Leeds the win.

“Pelly Ruddock is someone who has shown now he’s a Championship player, the guy’s incredible," continued Jones.

“He goes through the leagues, take a little bit of time to adapt, never changes his playing character, is confident, but intelligent, a lot more intelligent than anybody gives him credit for.

“I was delighted with his performance, but it would be unfair to single anybody out as the boys to a man were outstanding.”

Ruddock, 26, has been with Luton since 2013 and has won promotion from the Conference, League Two and League One with the club.

The verdict

Everything looked doom and gloom for Luton when they slipped into the relegation zone earlier in the month but after a strong showing against Leeds and the win against Charlton, the spirit seems to be back at the club.

Coming up from League One they were expected to be the best of the promoted sides but they've struggled for much of the season. Ruddock has been impressive though and has once again shown that he can make the step-up with Luton - he'll be pivotal in making sure that Luton are playing Championship football next year.
