Luton Town manager Graeme Jones has offered further insight into his decision to change the shape of his team during their narrow loss to Preston North End on Saturday.

The Hatters' boss ditched his preferred 4-3-1-2 diamond formation for the trip to Deepdale in favour of adding more width to his side, and despite the loss he was happy with what he saw.

“We changed the shape, got a massive reaction from the group, so that aspect’s satisfying," Jones said in an interview with Dunstable Today.

"I really liked it, I really liked the shape, I think we were a lot stronger. I think we’ve been good in the diamond at home, so I’ll have to look at it."

Kazenga Lualua and Callum McManaman were both brought in in attack to add some much-needed pace down either flank whilst Harry Cornick, Andrew Shinnie and Ryan Runnicliffe were all among those to drop to the bench,

Paul Gallagher gave Alex Neil's side the lead just five minutes into proceedings in Lancashire, reacting quickest after James Shea had denied him from the penaly spot.

But James Collins ensured that the visitors would not go into the break disheartened, levelling proceedings with a penalty of his own just two minutes before half-times.

It was not to be, however as Jayden Stockley secured all three points for North End with just six minutes of the 90 left to play.

The verdict

This was always going to be a very tough match for Luton and I think Jones should take plenty of positives from the match.

He has at least shown now that he is not just a one-trick pony and can change it up when he feels it is necessary.

It will be interesting now to see if he sticks with the same group for the upcoming clash with Swansea City or if he reverts to the diamond.
