New Middlesbrough boss Jonathan Woodgate has praised forward Martin Braithwaite and insists he can still have a future at the Riverside.

The Danish international was a big money signing for Boro two years ago, however he struggled to make an impact consistently and fell out of favour under Tony Pulis.

That saw Braithwaite sent out on loan to Leganes in the January window and many thought that would spell the end of his career in the north east.

And, whilst that still may be the case, Woodgate told Teesside Live that he can still be involved and that he wants him to stay.

"He's a Middlesbrough Football Club player and he's a good player. Of course I can trust him. 100%. No problems. I've got his back, he's got my back - no problems.

"Why did he go? You've got to have a manager who wants you, firstly, and I like Martin. I think he's a really, really good player and I think he can offer this football club a lot. You'll have to ask Martin if he wants to be here, but I'd love him to be here."

The Verdict

Keeping Braithwaite would be good news from Woodgate's perspective as there's no doubt that he is a top player and could be a star at this level.

And, that's essentially what the new boss has said here. However, from a financial aspect it may make sense to move him on as he will be a high earner.

Ultimately, you can imagine this will be down to the board and whether the club receive an offer that they deem acceptable.

If not, the former Toulouse man will stick around and he could add a lot to the team if he does in a different style of play to the previous manager.
