Jonathan Woodgate provides injury update as Middlesbrough duo forced off against Leeds United

Jonathan Woodgate has revealed that Ashley Fletcher and George Friend have suffered hamstring injuries which will be assessed in the coming days.

The Middlesbrough pair were both forced off during Wednesday night’s 1-0 defeat against Leeds United at the Riverside Stadium.

It’s set to be a crucial few weeks for the Teessiders and Woodgate says that he’s hopeful that the duo won’t be out for too long.

As quoted by Middlesbrough’s official website, Woodgate said: “There are slight hamstring injuries.

“We’ll maybe scan them tomorrow but we’ll see how they get on in the next 48 hours.

“Hopefully it won’t be too bad, the doctor doesn’t think it will be too bad so let’s see.”

Jonathan Woodgate also provided an update on three other players who could be closing in on a return in the coming weeks.

“Patrick Roberts is getting there, as is Dani Ayala but I don’t want to put a time limit on them,” he said.

“And Dael Fry as well, I’d put them three in the same boat.

“With Patrick it’s a muscle injury so you have to be particularly careful.”

The verdict

The next few weeks are going to be absolutely pivotal for Middlesbrough.

Jonathan Woodgate’s side are now level on points with the drop zone with only a superior goal difference keeping their heads above water.

It’s possible that the Teessiders could drop into the relegation zone before their next fixture against Nottingham Forest, meaning that it’s imperative that they start picking up results.

If they don’t it could easily go from a season of transition to a season of turmoil.
