Under-pressure Middlesbrough boss Jonathan Woodgate hit out at Marvin Johnson after his costly red card in the draw with Hull City today.

The 28-year-old was rightly sent off for a high challenge on Eric Lichaj towards the end of the first half at the Riverside, with Boro leading 2-0 at the time.

And, it was a defining moment in the game, with Hull dominating against ten men and a Jarrod Bowen brace ensured they left with a point, leaving Boro without a win in nine and outside the bottom three on goal difference.

Speaking to Teesside Live, Woodgate made no excuses for Johnson and made it clear that his moment of stupidity was why they dropped two points.

"I thought for as long as we had 11 men on the pitch we were absolutely sensational. It's a lack of discipline (from Johnson). You can't tackle like that and expect to stay on the pitch. I've told him he's cost the team and he knows it himself.

"He's said nothing. What can he say? He knows he's cost his team, he can't really answer anything back, can he."

The verdict

You have to have some sympathy for the rookie boss here. The side were superb early on, deservedly had a two-goal lead and he can't legislate for one of his players doing something so stupid.

So, whilst it's not the done thing, he is right to single out Johnson for criticism because anyone watching the game knew that was the turning point.

That doesn't excuse some of the tactical decisions Woodgate made afterwards and they should be scrutinised by the fans but ultimately if they had 11 on the pitch they looked as though they would have won.
