Jonathan Woodgate was left unhappy after he tore into his Middlesbrough side's 'terrible' performance against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Boro were left shocked after the Owls scored four first-half goals as Woodgate's team seemed to fall apart.

This leaves them in 18th place in the Championship with the new boss not getting off to the greatest of starts as manager.

They'll be aiming to battle back when they host Preston on Tuesday night in what will be another tough game for the Teesside outfit.

Woodgate was left angry and explained the key problems within the backline.

Speaking to the Hartlepool Mail, Woodgate said: "I played a few games at centre-half, as you know, and you pride yourself by winning aerial battles, no matter who you are up against.

"I played against a lot of different players who are big units but you find a way to beat them in the air, getting yourself in the right position, it’s about determination, who wants it more. We didn’t want it enough in that first half.

"It was sloppy, I’m not going to sit up here and say it was good, it was terrible, it wasn’t good enough.”

The Verdict

It has been a rather poor start for Woodgate as manager, and instead of making his side more attacking they seem to just be leaking goals.

He has to sort it out quick as they don't want to be involved in an unexpected relegation battle that could potentially put his job at risk in the future.

They need stability and a run of results but it's not happening for them at the moment, maybe it'll change on Tuesday against Preston.
