Blackburn Rovers boss Jon Dahl Tomasson has praised the club after they managed to secure Ash Phillips on a long-term contract.

The 17-year-old defender is extremely highly-rated at Ewood Park and has featured in four Championship games this season. However, there were doubts over his future, with Tottenham known to be among the admirers of the teenager.

Despite that interest, Phillips chose to stay with Rovers, with his new contract announced earlier this month.

And, speaking to the club's media, Tomasson has outlined his plans for the youngster, as well as congratulating him on the deal.

"It’s great for the boy. It’s why you need to have clear and open contact with the the players, so there will be no surprises. Ash has done a great job, and will play more games this season."

Phillips had a very busy international break, featuring in three games for the England U19 side, which they all won. But, he's still sure to be in the squad this weekend as Blackburn look to get back to winning ways against Millwall.

The verdict

This was great news for Blackburn because we know they don't have the biggest budget in the league, so there needs to be a focus on developing their own players.

Anyone who has seen Phillips play will recognise the ability he has and you can understand why Tomasson was very pleased to get this sorted.

It now allows the centre-back to focus on football and he will be determined to continue his progress under the new boss, who has shown he will give him a chance.
