‘Joke,’ ‘No surprise there’ – Many Portsmouth fans react to latest club confirmation on ace

A number of Portsmouth fans have bemoaned the latest confirmation from the club that forward John Marquis will now serve a three-match ban after their appeal on his red card was unsuccessful.

Marquis was handed a red card somewhat controversially during Portsmouth’s important 2-1 win at Shrewsbury Town on Saturday, which came after he had scored his 14th league goal of the campaign to put Danny Cowley’s side into a 2-0 lead. He appeared to take some of the ball, but also catch Harry Chapman a little in the process. It did seem more of a yellow card challenge than a sending-off.

Cowley confirmed to the media after the game that the club would look to appeal the decision and hope that his ban would be overturned. That comes with them needing as many of their most important players available as possible as they aim to consolidate their place in the play-offs which they have managed to regain after couple of much-needed wins.

Portsmouth’s confirmation of the unsuccessful appeal now means that the 28-year-old will sit out the next three games against Rochdale, Wigan Athletic and Burton Albion. Pompey will now have to find different ways of scoring in the final third to ensure that they continue their winning run.

Many Portsmouth fans were left frustrated by the decision not to overturn the red card, but also unsurprised with some supporters remarking that the game has gone too soft.
