Walsall have moved quickly to cover the dismissal of Dean Keates, by naming former Birmingham City player Martin O'Connor as his replacement until the end of the season.

The 51-year-old has previously been assistant to Chris Hutchings at the Bescot, but the pair were sacked in 2011. He returned to the coaching staff earlier this season as part of Dean Keates' team and he now replaces his former boss on a temporary basis.

The Saddlers have tumbled down the table in recent weeks and currently find themselves in serious danger of relegation to League Two.

They're on 42 points, one point adrift of safety with an inferior goal difference.

Three points separate Accrington Stanley in 17th and Walsall in 22nd, level with Rochdale on 23rd place.

It promises to be a hotly-contested run in, but with just two victories in their last 13 matches, hope is thin on the ground for Saddlers' fans.

That hope hasn't been raised with the appointment of O'Connor, whose only previous managerial experience has been with Halesowen Town.

A number of fans have reacted angrily to news of his appointment They feel the club have gone for a cheap option and if they were going to keep Keates' staff, they may as well have kept Keates too.
