Bristol City manager Lee Johnson has remained coy over the potential signing of Nahki Wells from Burnley.

The 29-year-old was today recalled from his season-long loan-spell at QPR.

He returns to Burnley whom he joined from Huddersfield Town in 2017, but has never started a match for the club.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche has recalled the 29-year-old amid speculations surrounding his future - the club have been keen to offload the striker this month, and Bristol City looks like the favourites to land him.

All of Leeds United, Nottingham Forest and Wigan Athletic have been eyeing up the striker this month, who scored 15 goals in all competitions for QPR this month, and wanted to remain in West London.

When asked about his pursuit of Wells today, Robins boss Johnson told Bristol Live:

"It’s not our player so it’s difficult to talk about other players, whether loans or permanents."

There's a week left of the transfer window. Bristol City have yet to make a signing this month but have been in the market for a striker since it opened on New Year's Day - Lyle Taylor has also been linked with a move to Ashton Gate.

It's expected that Burnley will propose a swap deal for Wells. Football Insider reports that Dyche is keen on bringing Josh Brownhill to Turf Moor in exchange for Wells.

The verdict

Bristol City fans would love to see Wells cross the line. He's shown this season at QPR that he's still capable of providing the goods at Championship level, and he'd slot right into that Bristol City line-up.

Whether Johnson would want to part ways with Brownhill for him though is another matter. He's been key to everything that they've done this season, and his departure could force Johnson into a rush to replace him this week.
