Johnnie Jackson speaks out amid Bristol Rovers transfer interest in AFC Wimbledon man

AFC Wimbledon’s Luke McCormick has impressed for the club since his move there – and now he could be sold elsewhere this transfer window.

For the Dons, he managed a total of 40 league games last time around and despite being a midfielder, he still managed 14 goal contributions over the course of the campaign. It led to an average of 0.44 goals or assists per 90 – an excellent record for a midfielder.

With the player having impressed despite Wimbledon’s relegation down to League Two, he could now be allowed the chance to continue to play football in the third tier this season. That’s because Bristol Rovers, who took the Dons spot in League One, are now wanting to try and sign McCormick this window.

In fact, the player has lined up for Rovers before too. He played for the club back in the 2020/21 season, when he managed 39 league appearances. The player also managed six goals and two assists but, like with Wimbledon, couldn’t keep the team up as they fell to League Two.

Now though, Rovers seemingly want the player back for the third tier season – but Wimbledon boss Johnnie Jackson has told London News Online that he won’t be rushing to sell McCormick and that the player will come at ‘a premium’ if a team wants to sign him.

That’s because the player still has time on his current deal with the Dons – two years – and because of his importance in their first-team squad.

Speaking about the player and a potential transfer move then, he said: “He is a good player there has been interest in, but he has got two years left on his contract and is highly valued by the club. With that, [it means he] comes at a premium.

“We have got to get him fit before anything, but there is obviously interest in a player such as him.”

The Verdict

Luke McCormick played some very good football for Wimbledon last season despite the club being relegated and it’s no surprise to see a League One club wanting to sign him.

Even with the Dons now in League Two, he was arguably their best player during the last campaign and deserves to stay in the third tier. The midfielder has an excellent record in the division and if he stays in League Two, he could be one of the best in the league there.

However, with Bristol Rovers keen to sign him, you would have to think the player would prefer a move back into League One. However, with the player important to Wimbledon, you’d expect the Dons to be wanting a significant six-figure fee at the very least before a transfer can be agreed.

It seems a transfer deal could be done though – it’s just Rovers might have to stump up a decent fee for the player to have him in the club’s first-team for the current season.
