Aston Villa have confirmed the departure of assistant head coach John Terry - a position he held for almost three years.

Football League World learned exclusively last week that former Chelsea captain has been closely linked with the vacant managerial position at Swansea City following Steve Cooper's exit.

Terry was appointed as part of Dean Smith's backroom staff with the club in the Championship in October 2018. However, a promotion during his first season at the club and two seasons of Premier League football, has seen Villa consolidate their position in England's top tier.

The 40-year-old joined The Midlands club as a player in 2017, making 32 appearances for Villa as club captain.

It remains to be seen what the immediate future may hold for the former England and Chelsea defender, but it seems that he could be back in employment rather imminently, should he engage in talks at Swansea.

The South Wales club have finished in the play-off positions in the last two seasons, but this year it seems a summer of rebuild.

The verdict

John Terry has had an excellent three years in a role that should directly lead him to a managerial role.

If he does join Swansea, then it will be a great experience for him with a side who have gained a reputation of playing brilliant football. However, his style of football is yet to be established and tested.

It is a big job at Swansea however. The club have seen two exceptional loan players head back to their respective clubs, whilst the extremely influential Andre Ayew has also left the club.

Matt Grimes' Swansea career is also yet to be determined - another player who would be a huge loss.
