Former Norwich City goalkeeper John Ruddy has backed his old side to win promotion to the Premier League this season.
Daniel Farke’s side are currently top of the Championship table, four points ahead of second-placed Sheffield United and with a five point gap over Leeds United in third.
The Canaries begin there promotion run-in against play-off hopefuls Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium this weekend and will be looking to make it seven successive wins.
Ruddy won promotion to the top flight twice with Norwich – via automatic promotion in 2011 and then again via the play-offs in 2015 – and the goalkeeper is backing his former side to get over the line this season.
“If anyone connected to Norwich thought they were going to be in this situation with eight games left they are liars,” Ruddy said on the Talk Norwich City podcast, as quoted by the PinkUn.
“There is the weight of expectation taken off, straight away.
“Norwich is back. They are playing fearless football, high intensity, cut throat football but also winning dirty and winning ugly. All those ingredients you need.”
Ruddy won promotion to the Premier League for the third time in his career with Wolves last season but has mainly been used as a substitute this campaign.
Ruddy is right. Norwich have been brilliant in the Championship this season and if the Canaries can seal their promotion to the top flight, it will be hard for anyone to argue that they don’t deserve it.
Farke deserves enormous credit for what he has been able to achieve with his players and it is fair to say that they have already exceed all expectations this season.
All that remains to be seen is whether the Canaries can get over the line and seal their return to the Premier League.
