Ipswich Town caretaker manager John McGreal has insisted that the next permanent manager of the Tractor Boys has a lot of work to do and believes the winter window will be vital for them.

It has been a very disappointing season for the Tractor Boys so far with them failing to reach anywhere near the level of performances and consistency in results that was expected at the start of the campaign.

That comes after their ambitious recruitment drive over the summer looked to have placed them in a strong position to mount a real challenge for promotion.

McGreal’s caretaker spell has failed to get an upturn in the performances and results, and the Tractor Boys’ season took another turn for the worst on Wednesday night when they were knocked out of the FA Cup by League Two Barrow. Those types of results are simply not good enough for a squad that has had a lot of investment placed into it since the start of pre-season.

There will be a chance for a new manager to come in and assess the squad ahead of the January transfer window now, but only if Ipswich get a move on with their selection process.

Getting the chance to invest in the players that they want could well be a vital way of any new manager being able to instantly improve results and performances.

Speaking to the media following Ipswich’s loss at Barrow, via TWDT, McGreal suggested that the next manager at Ipswich is going to face a lot of work ahead of them. While he added that he thinks being able to add to the squad in January will make a big difference.

He said: “There’s work to be done, there’s no question of that. Not even looking over the last three or four games, you look right the way through the season. It’s the inconsistency.

“We’ve had false dawns, there have been some good performances, there have been not-so-good performances, so there are plays there and shapes and different personnel to work with.

“There are plenty of bodies to work with. But the new guy will come in and he’ll have his own ideas, he’ll have the January window just around the corner as well, which I think will make a big difference as well.

“There’s a lot to work with. There’s a lot of work to be done, but there’s still a lot to work with.

“And also you’ve got the fans behind you, which is another huge plus. I know for one that the fans will get right behind the new guy as well.”

The verdict

Ipswich’s lack of form now must be a huge concern for the club’s ambitious hierarchy and the players have failed to deliver since the departure of Paul Cook.

That shows that the issues with the results and performances were coming more from the playing squad than the manager and that means the new boss faces a major task as McGreal has acknowledged here.

It is not a case of the players at Ipswich not caring or not putting the effort in. They are just lacking in confidence it seems and that is something that can be swiftly turned around if the new manager can come in and win a couple of wins in his first few matches in charge. However, at the moment, that would be easier said than done looking at recent displays.

There will be a need to invest in the squad again in January, but Ipswich also need to keep in mind that they invested a lot into the squad in the summer and those players should not be discarded.

Therefore, it should not be a lot of changes in the winter window, but more subtle additions to improve the balance of the side and get it adjusting it towards the new manager’s philosophy.
