Sheffield United midfielder John Fleck believes that the Blades could “push on” in the Premier League next season, if the team can achieve promotion.

Chris Wilder’s side are currently second in the Championship table, one point ahead of third-placed Leeds United and four behind leaders Norwich City, with eight games remaining.

It has been a brilliant season for the Blades, who being their promotion run-in against Bristol City at Bramall Lane this weekend and Fleck believes the club can succeed in the Premier League if they are able to get there.

“With eight games to go we are in a great position,” said Fleck, as quoted by the Sheffield Star.

“The Premier League is where everyone wants to play; it is the biggest league in the world. We are not really expected to be there and we are punching above our weight in terms of budget.

“We have a great manager and a hard working team, which has helped us, and we could push on if we get up.

“It’s a very well-run club with great supporters and a great group of players and the manager’s incredible as well. If we keep working hard you never know what might happen.”

The Verdict:

Sheffield United have done brilliantly this season and are in with a real chance of returning to the Premier League.

Fleck was full of praise for his teammates, his manager and the club’s supporters and his message will no doubt please fans at Bramall Lane.

He could be right that Sheffield United could succeed in the top flight, but the players must not get ahead of themselves.

While the team are in a great position, they are only one point ahead of Leeds and the players must maintain their focus for the final eight matches.

Fleck and his teammates will no doubt know the importance this eight-match run-in for the club and will be desperate to deliver for the supporters.

Given the way the team have been playing in recent weeks, they stand a good chance of being able to do so.
