Fleetwood Town manager Joey Barton has hit back at officials following his second red card of the season and the red card to Ched Evans in his side's 1-0 win over Wycombe.

Barton, 37, has already seen red this season when he was sent off in his side's 0-0 draw with Bristol Rovers back in December.

The former Manchester City man wasn't the only member of Fleetwood's team to be sent off last night, with striker Ched Evans being shown a straight red card in the 68th minute.

The 37-year-old questioned both decisions following his side's victory, calling them 'incorrect.'

Speaking to the club's media channels after the win, Barton said: "I’ve gone and spoken to the referee about why I was sent-off, he’s told me why and it’s incorrect.

"We’ll wait for the match report and speak to the FA. Usually, if I’ve been in the wrong I’ll throw my hands up," the former Newcastle United midfielder continued. "The fourth official has made a mistake. He thinks he’s heard something aimed at the referee which didn’t happen."

As well as feeling aggrieved about his own red card, Barton was also unhappy with the decision to send Ched Evans off for an apparent elbow.

"I’ll have to watch it back, I didn’t think it was a red card, even though there was contact," Barton said after the game. "I think the decision was made far, far too quickly. He didn’t give himself any thinking space, but we’ll wait to see the referee’s report and what they have to say for themselves."

Evans will now miss Fleetwood's next three games, all against opposition higher in the table than them in Peterborough, Portsmouth, and Sunderland.

The Verdict

There certainly is contact from Evans and he raises his elbow highly into the face of Jason McCarthy so it is unsurprising that the referee sent Evans off.

Maybe once Barton has had a closer look at the sending off he may agree it was a red card but in the heat of the moment, it is unsurprising to hear him defend his player.

Although Barton believes his own red card was unjust, he will be more bothered about Evans' red card and will have to work out a who to replace the forward with over their next three tricky games.
