Fleetwood Town manager Joey Barton has denied allegations that he assaulted Barnsley head coach Daniel Stendel.

An alleged altercation occurred in the tunnel at Oakwell after Barnsley's 4-2 win over Fleetwood on Saturday and police are investigating the incident.

Barnsley have complied to the FA and the EFL about the alleged incident and BBC Sport reported yesterday that a man has been arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated assault, but has been released on bail.

Barton has taken to social media to distance himself from the allegations, with this message on Twitter.

Barton said that it would be "inappropriate" to make any further comment, with the incident still under investigation.

Barnsley moved back into the automatic promotion places in League One with the win at Oakwell. Stendel's side are currently two points ahead of third-placed Sunderland, although they have played a game more.

Meanwhile, Barton's Fleetwood are 11th in the table after the defeat, 13 points outside the play-off places, but are comfortably clear of the relegation zone.

Both teams are in action over the Easter weekend, with Barnsley taking on Shrewsbury and Plymouth and Fleetwood facing Peterborough and Blackpool.

The Verdict:

It is probably sensible that Barton does not make any further comment on the matter, as the alleged incident is still under investigation.

Hopefully both teams can put the alleged incident behind them and move forward.
