Blackburn Rovers midfielder Joe Rothwell has hailed his side’s performance against Brentford as one of the best this season, as they won 1-0 on Wednesday night.

Tony Mowbray’s side produced a solid performance at Ewood Park last night as they halted Brentford’s surge up the table to record back-to-back victories for the third time this season.

The game’s only goal came early on after a wonderfully crafted move was finished off by Bradley Dack, with Joe Rothwell at the heart of the move in the final third. The victory sees the Rovers climb to 13th in the table and just six points behind the play-off places heading into December.

Heading into last night’s fixture, there were a few players outlined by Mowbray as being potential doubts for the game, one of those was Joe Rothwell.

However, the former Manchester United midfielder managed to make the starting XI for the game and to great effect too as his midfield performance pushed Blackburn to a clean sheet against one fo the most talented attacks in the division.

Speaking to the club’s official site following their win, Rothwell had this to say on the back-to-back wins: "It was brilliant, from everyone on the pitch but we put a great shift in.

"We knew it was going to be a tough game, they’re a team who try to get it down and pass it about. We knew we had to get about them and upset them.

"The fans were a bit frustrated with how we played on Saturday, we said before the game that it wasn’t too much about the performance, it was just about getting the three points, we’ve been on a bit of a torrid run.

"We knew coming into tonight we had to back it up, we’ve gone out there and put in a hell of a shift.

"It’s down to us to go there and put in a shift and a show for them but that game (Barnsley) was about the three points. Tonight was a top-class performance."

The Verdict

Rothwell is spot on in saying that the Brentford victory had to happen regardless of the glamour or lack thereof because it was a case of getting back some momentum ahead of some crucial weeks.

Blackburn played very well to nullify a strong Brentford side and there is no reason why Blackburn can begin to try to consolidate their standing far away from the bottom three to build going into January.
