Following a run of eight straight Championship defeats, Mick McCarthy was relieved of his duties at Cardiff City.

The Bluebirds, who were unbeaten in their first four second-tier games this season, took a bad turn and are now five games without a goal.

The South Wales club are now in search of a manager who can stop the rot at the Cardiff City Stadium, whilst also ensuring that they can set themselves up for the future.

Speaking to BBC Radio Wales - and as cited by the Daily Record - about Cardiff's current situation and any potential replacements who could come in, former Cardiff midfielder Joe Ledley said: "It is a difficult one.

"I heard rumours Chris Wilder was at the last game so there's links there.

"The person who comes in has to realise there will be no money and it will be a difficult task to turn it around. A lot of players are leaving at the end of the season as they are out of contract.

"It's down to Cardiff to appoint the right person. Mark [Hudson] is an up-and-coming manager.

"I know him very well and he is hungry to get into the game. He may have to wait his time but it would be perfect for him.

"Neil Lennon is still out there who I worked with at Celtic. He would definitely be interested, I know."

The verdict

Whoever is tasked with the Cardiff job has a very big job in their hands.

There is no denying that The Bluebirds possess some very strong Championship options when it comes to their squad, but there are certain positions that will need addressing in the near future.

It will be interesting to see if they opt for a young, progressive manager who can help with establishing a new identity, or if they decide to go down the route of appointing someone with the experience to get them out of the mess they find themselves in.

Wilder is seemingly in the front seat right now, and given his experience of succeeding in this division, he has every chance of revitalising Cardiff.
