Former Leeds United striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has suggested that Patrick Bamford’s issue is mental not technical.

Bamford has scored four goals in eight appearances for Leeds this season but failed to find the net against Derby County in the 1-1 draw on Saturday.

The 26-year-old was one of a number of players who spurned chances before Chris Martin scored a late equaliser for the Rams.

Is this the WORST Leeds United XI from the last 15 years? We'll let YOU decide....

Bamford did win a penalty in the second half but it was missed by Mateusz Klich.

Speaking on Sky Sports (quotes via HITC), Hasselbaink discussed Bamford’s performance and what he can do moving forward to improve.

He said: “Bamford had three or four good chances.

“Yes, he did play well, but if you miss them, and Klich scores for 2-0 then nobody will talk about his misses.”

He added: "I don't think it's a technical thing. I think it's a mental thing. Wanting to score goals, no matter what type of goals.

“Whether it comes from your backside, your knee, but it's about being in the right positions. It's a mental, a mental thing for me.”

Despite failing to win, Leeds remain top of the league as Swansea City also drew on the weekend.

The Verdict

Bamford had a few chances to put the game to bed against Derby but failed to make any of them count.

He may feel slightly hard done by the criticism that will inevitably come his way after he won the penalty for Klich but such is life as a Championship striker.

It will be interesting to see how long it is before on-loan forward Eddie Nketiah is given a chance to start instead of the 26-year-old.
