Jermain Defoe addresses immediate future amidst Sunderland speculation

Jermain Defoe has revealed that he has a lot of options regarding his immediate future, during a conversation with talkSPORT, and as cited by Sunderland Echo’s Phil Smith.

The 39-year-old, who is now a free agent after leaving Rangers, is on Lee Johnson’s radar at Sunderland, as per a report from The Sun.

Addressing Sunderland’s interest during his interview with talkSPORT, Defoe confirmed Sunderland’s interest and is considering The Stadium of Light as an option at this stage.

The vastly experienced forward, who featured regularly with England between 2004 and 2017, enjoyed a productive loan spell with the Black Cats between 2015 and 2017.

Quiz: Can you name which club Sunderland signed these 28 defenders from?

1 of 28

1. Dion Sanderson

The forward netted 37 times in 91 outings for the Wearside club, with Sunderland operating in the Premier League at the time.

Defoe had played just eight minutes of league football this season for Rangers, with the forward possessing a strong scoring record of 32 from 74 for the Scottish champions.

The verdict

Despite his age, Defoe is a natural goalscorer who has proven exactly that throughout his career both domestically and on the international stage.

His intelligence, technical ability and final third quality, all still make him an option who could shine in the EFL with Sunderland and at a club where he has earned himself an excellent reputation.

He would also be an excellent player for Johnson to have around the dressing room, with his experience, high-performance mentality and personality, all likely to have a positive impact on Sunderland’s promotion charge.

It will be interesting to see where, and what level Defoe’s next destination will be, with the forward possessing a high number of options.
