Hendrick has joined up with the squad as one of their most experienced options in central midfield, and it will be interesting to see how the Irishman's role differs from his time at Burnley and Newcastle.

The Verdict

Hendrick has endured a difficult last six months or so, the attack-minded midfielder underwhelmed on loan at Queens Park Rangers in the second half of last season and was part of some disappointing results for the Republic of Ireland after 2021/22's conclusion.

Ince was able to rally the troops and create a strong mentality at Reading at the back end of last season.

That is going to be much harder to replicate over the course of 46 games, and the role of senior players will be even more crucial, to which Hendrick is amongst, with the Premier League experience he has gained over the last few years at Turf Moor and St James' Park.
