Leeds United recently registered their interest in signing RB Leipzig striker Jean-Kévin Augustin according to a report from The Athletic's Phil Hay.

Augustin is currently on loan with French side AS Monaco, but has struggled for consistent game time away from the German club this term.

In total, the forward has made just two league starts in the ten appearances he has made in Monaco's league campaign.

Phil Hay also recently revealed that the 22-year-old is keen on a move to Leeds United, although a deal is likely to be complex to complete with Augustin currently out on loan.

But the forward has dropped a major hint that his move to Elland Road could be closer than originally thought, with the forward liking a number of messages on social media from excited Leeds United supporters.

Leeds are in need of a striker to challenge Patrick Bamford for his starting spot in Marcelo Bielsa's squad this season, with the former Middlesbrough forward struggling for consistency in his performances this term.

Eddie Nketiah was recently recalled from his loan spell at Elland Road by Arsenal, after making just two league starts for the Whites as they look to win promotion into the Premier League this season.

The Verdict:

This is an exciting development for the Elland Road faithful.

Many would have thought that Leeds might not be that close to completing a deal to land Augustin's signature before the January transfer window closes next week.

But given that he is already acknowledging a number of Leeds supporters' messages on social media, could hint that his potential move to Elland Road is closer than originally expected.

If he can hit the ground running and provide the ideal competition for Patrick Bamford's starting spot in the Leeds squad, then he could be the man to help fire Leeds to a long-awaited promotion back into the top-flight.
