Ex-Queens Park Rangers forward Jay Bothroyd has had his say on Ebere Eze and his international preference, and believes that the 21-year-old 'doesn't have to commit to anything' just yet.

Eze has been the story of the season for QPR - he's already in double-figures for the season, has been chipping in with the assists and has made his Young Lions debut too.

But the latter poses a life decision that Eze has to make, and that is who to represent as a full international - Nigeria or England?

Bothroyd, speaking exclusively to 888sport, gave his view on the situation:

“He doesn’t have to commit to anything right now. It depends on the player. Even though he was born in England his parents might want him to play for Nigeria.

"But it’s a decision he has to make himself and it comes down to preference. Nigeria are a strong team so it’s not like he’s going to go off and play for a lesser team. They’re a good international team."

Amaju Pinnick, President of the Nigerian Football Federation, has been chasing Eze all season as he hopes to build a strong Nigeria side for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar - he's also tried to persuade Reading's Ovie Ejaria, who looks set to become a Super Eagle.

"Don’t get me wrong, England are one of the biggest teams in the world but it comes down to choice and it might ultimately be a choice he makes with his parents," concluded Bothroyd.

Having already made his England U21 debut, Eze faces this potentially life-changing decision in the near future. But he's not yet made any public announcement regarding the matter, and Pinnick has made no further comments.

The verdict

It's a really tough one for Eze to deal with, but Bothroyd is right and it's not a decision that he needs to make right away. He's still only 21-years-old and for now, he just needs to focus on his football at QPR, and look to put them back into play-off contention.
