Bristol City midfielder Markus Henriksen has offered further insight into why he chose to move to Ashton Gate during the January window rather than another club.

The Norwegian moved on loan from Hull City until the end of the season after falling out of favour under Grant McCann and has now admitted that Robins boss Lee Johnson played a big part in him making up his mind.

"I heard earlier in January of the interest but when it happened it was quite late," he told his pre-match press conference on Wednesday ahead of the club's clash with West Brom, reported by Bristol Live (14:13).

"I got a call from the manager and its almost like he had fire in the eyes.

"He said it was a great squad and that really made me feel like this is something I want to be a part of."

The 27 year-old had been a member of the Hull set up since the summer of 2016 but was not involved in the squad once in the opening half of this season.

He appears to have found a new lease of life in Bristol, however, playing the full 90 minutes in their last two games, picking up the man of the match award against Derby as well.

City will be hoping to bounce back to winning ways this weekend when they welcome West Bromwich Albion. They currently sit in seventh place but know that a win could take them as high as third, if other results go their way.

The verdict

This definitely looks like being one of the better career moves Henriksen could have made.

For whatever reason, McCann just did not fancy him at Hull but he has moved to a club with a real need for a level-headed midfield enforcer like himself.

He appears to have nailed down that role already and a big performance against the Baggies would really secure his status as the latest fan favourite at Ashton Gate.
