Pontus Jansson has moved to pile praise on Kalvin Phillips, who has been given a key role to play under Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds United.

Leeds are playing in a flexible 4-1-4-1 system, with Phillips’ role in holding midfield allowing the likes of Barry Douglas and Luke Ayling freedom to attack from their full-back roles.

Phillips has started every game so far under Bielsa, featuring on seven occasions across all competitions.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post ahead of Friday’s clash with Middlesbrough, Jansson was complimentary about Phillips: “You can see Kalvin has a high responsibility from Marcelo.

“He's become a much better player than the last few seasons, he's getting older and has more experience. He's worked hard and in good shape."

In the 2-2 draw with Swansea City last week, Phillips made his 100thappearance for the Whites, although it was cut short within half-an-hour, with Bielsa opting to substitute the 22-year-old with his side trailing 1-0.

However, Phillips was back for the 3-0 victory over Norwich City last weekend, and was again shielding the defence against Preston North End in the League Cup last night.

On Friday, Leeds will face Middlesbrough at Elland Road, with the two clubs matched on 13 points from their opening five fixtures of the season.

The Verdict

It’s become clear under Bielsa that Phillips will be key, with the midfielder in a crucial role and playing a lot of football.

You can see that Phillips has improved under Bielsa, although there is still need for the midfielder to work on his consistency if he is going to play the role Bielsa wants him to.

Jansson can see that improvement, as can the club’s supporters, who are fully behind their academy graduate.
